Aging-in-Place Accessibility in Kitchen Renovations

Home improvement website Houzz.com recently released this year’s Kitchen Trends Study, where a total of 1,337 homeowners were surveyed regarding their recent or planned kitchen renovation projects. Among the most notable findings in the study involved respondents aged 55 or older. Handyman Connection of Matthews, your local experts in home maintenance, discusses more.

Aging in Place in Larger Kitchens

About 52% of renovating homeowners today are baby boomers, or those aged 55 or older, with almost seven in ten looking to remain in their homes for the next ten years or so. The study, however, showed that only 37% of them address the needs of aging household members during kitchen renovations.

This is in stark contrast to the 56% who address such needs during master bathroom renovations. Surprisingly, one in five people belonging in younger generations gets to address aging-in-place kitchen needs.

About 28% of the baby boomers address current aging-related needs during kitchen renovation; only 10% address future needs. Within that 28%, more than half of them reacted to the needs that arose two years ago.

Addressing Seniors’ Needs for Kitchen Renovations

Addressing aging-in-place needs in kitchen renovations means opening up the whole space for more accessibility. In fact, nearly half of those addressing aging make their kitchens more open to nearby rooms and more than a third wanted to expand these spaces.

Major upgrades are also important for baby boomers. According to the study, they want their kitchens to be equipped with elaborate lighting inside cabinets, appliances like cooktops and wall ovens, pull-out pantries, natural stone flooring and touch-only faucets.

At Handyman Connection of Matthews, we recognize that many senior homeowners would prefer to age in place rather than move to senior housing. To help them reach their goal, we offer a variety of installation and remodeling services that can help them remain in their own homes as they age, and do so safely, independently and comfortably.
