Home Improvement / July 20, 2018
With the amount of food and moisture handled in the kitchen, it’s not surprising that it can be one of the most hazardous areas in the home. Remember that a clean kitchen is a healthy kitchen, and the best way to keep it clean is to prioritize health risk “hotspots”: the sink and the garbage disposal.
Cleaning the Sink
The kitchen sink gets wet on a regular basis, and that mixed with bits of leftover food can get grimy faster than in any other spot in the home. One of the most important parts of keeping the sink clean is to rinse it thoroughly after every use. This helps wash away the debris and other substances that could encourage mold and bacteria growth.
In addition to rinsing the sink, it also helps to clean it more thoroughly on a regular basis. Have a nylon sponge and mild soap solution for cleaning the sink at the end of the day. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste that you can use for scrubbing the sink once a week.
Proper Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposal gives you a quick and easy way to get rid of debris, but it can harbor a lot of disease-causing bacteria if not cleaned properly. While it does a good job of shredding most debris, you can still expect bits of food stuck in the blades. Furthermore, debris can eventually build up to the point that the blades can get seized up.
You can also use the same cleaning methods used for cleaning the kitchen sink. Use tongs, however, when trying to scrub the garbage disposal to avoid possible injuries. You can also deodorize the garbage disposal by putting lemon halves in the unit while running the water for a few minutes.
