4 Great Ideas for Getting Rid of Clutter

Even a well-designed home can look unsightly if there’s too much clutter. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can try to make your home look clean and spacious. Here are four examples:

1.  Hang Stuff Up

Most small items look messy if they’re just stacked in a pile somewhere in your home. They take up too much floor or counter space and they keep you from making your home look more orderly. This is a great opportunity to make use of your walls for extra storage space. For example, a hanging board on the wall next to your kitchen counters can be used to hang cooking pans and utensils, while a rack lets you hang bags or baskets where you can put small toys and other items.

2. Open Shelves and Cabinets

The biggest problem with closed cabinet spaces is that they make you forget about the mess inside them. By switching to open shelves and cabinets, you’ll always have an idea whether you have enough storage space and you can always see if there are items that you can get rid of. Open shelves also give you the extra benefit of providing better access to your items.

3. Uniform Containers

One of the best ways to eliminate visual clutter is to add a sense of visual harmony to the view. Start by using containers with a uniform style. For example, you can use one type of jar to store your cooking ingredients in the kitchen or similar boxes to store children’s items in the play area. You can also pick colors that match the rest of the room’s color scheme to make those containers look like they really belong where they are.

4. Maximize Space

You would be surprised at the amount of free space that you can use to give your home more storage space. Look underneath the bed and in small gaps between appliances and the wall. For example, if there’s a gap several inches wide, it could be transformed into a retracting shelf. The more areas you can maximize, the fewer items will be left lying around that add to the clutter.
