When planning to share your home with pets, it’s important to consider their particular needs. Would an all-glass door really be practical when you have a dog running around? Pets are more than animals; they require time and a safe, comfortable home. Regardless of where you live, there are steps you can take to make sure your home is both safe and stylish. Handyman Connection® of Matthews shares some today:
Choose Durable Floors
Preserve the beauty of your interior by investing in a hard-surface flooring that keeps paw prints and potty accidents in check. Laminate, stone and ceramic are great low-maintenance choices. They are also cooler in hot weather, which is a great benefit for pets with thick fur. Tile is a wonderful alternative, but since it can be slippery, we recommend adding an area rug or rubber mat for safety. Rugs can also enhance the beauty of the room and muffle the sound of thumping tails.
Invest in Low-Maintenance Fabrics
Velvet or chenille-covered sofas look luxurious but they also serve as magnets for pet hair. Instead, choose upholstery fabrics that are easy to maintain in attractive patterns and bold colors. These include denim, canvas, and other synthetic options. The latter can resist moisture, stains, and odors, making it ideal for areas where your pets frequently rest. Another option is microfiber fabrics. They look great, wear well, and are easy to clean with soap and water.
Paint Your Walls
Pets can do a significant amount of damage to your walls. Rather than installing a beautiful wallpaper only to have it scratched and drooled on later, paint your walls in lively colors. This way, you can simply wipe away any slime on its surface. If you prefer patterns, you can add some with all-over stencils. A semi-gloss finish paint is perfect for rooms with high foot traffic and moisture while a satin-finish paint is recommended for living areas.
