Applying wallpaper is an effective way to transform your interior and cover up any imperfections. While you can do this project yourself, most homeowners often end up frustrated and unsatisfied with the results. Handyman Connection of Matthews shares some tips to help you avoid peeling seams and mismatched patterns. For flawless results, make sure you follow these tips:
Necessary Preparations
A clean surface is necessary for professional results. Wipe the walls with a sponge and warm water to remove the debris on its surface and let dry. Afterward, sand away any imperfections and fill any uneven areas with a drywall compound. Let this dry for at least 24 hours and sand it smooth. This ensures that you have an even surface to work with. Wipe dust off the walls using a damp sponge. Once dried you can apply a primer to ensure that your wallpaper sticks completely. Use a roller to apply on large surface areas and a putty knife as a shield when working on the trim. Let this dry for two hours before hanging the wallpaper.
Guideline
Ensure a proper application the first time by drawing a guide on the wall. Make sure you use a straightedge and level for plumb lines. When done, measure and cut the wallpaper, leaving at least four extra inches at the top. Reverse curl them and spread adhesive on the back in a figure-eight motion for an even application.
Proper Application
After applying adhesive on the first section of paper, fold its ends in on themselves and carry it to the wall. Stick it up against the surface and align it with the guideline you drew, making sure to leave two inches at the top and the bottom. Smooth the wallpaper with a smoothing brush and trim away the excess with a utility knife. Repeat the process with the other sheets of wallpaper and you’ll have a brand new interior in no time.
