Bathroom Recaulking Tips and Tricks

When it comes to taking care of your bathroom, one of the fundamental things to watch out for is your bathroom caulking. It’s essential for sealing the grout lines between your tub and walls to help prevent mold and mildew from growing. It also helps minimize leaks and more. As such, it’s important to ensure that caulking is always in great condition. Here are some simple bathroom caulking tips and tricks to keep it in great shape.

Watch Out for Problem Areas

Make sure that you watch out for areas where you’re more likely to find caulking issues. These areas are regularly wet, such as the corners, edges, bases and other crannies of your shower or tub, the sink or standalone showers. For instance, in your tub, you can find issues along the seal between the tub and the wall. For standalone showers, you could see caulking damage near the floor where the tile meets the wall.

Signs It’s Time to Recaulk

Here are the warning signs of issues:

  1. Cracks

  2. Discoloring

  3. Shrinking caulk

  4. Black mildew stains on caulking

When you notice these signs, remove the damaged caulk, eliminate the mildew damage, and recaulk the area.

How to Re-Caulk

First, you have to remove your old caulk by scraping it with a blade or softening it with a caulk remover. Make sure that you fully remove it before moving on to the next step. Clean it afterwards with a bleach solution to eliminate mold spores. Afterwards, carefully apply the new caulk with a caulking gun. Once done, clean and smoothen the new caulking with a wet finger. Make sure that this is done swiftly since caulking can dry rather quickly.
