Painting your home’s exterior might seem like a fun activity, until you’re standing outside your house and looking at your siding, wondering why the paint won’t stick. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, stop and ask yourself: could I be doing this wrong?
In this article, Handyman Connection® of Mason lists five exterior painting mistakes you could be making, and how to remedy each situation.
1. You didn’t prep the surface.
Different siding materials require different preparations. Whether it’s sanding down peeling paint or simply just cleaning the dirt and grime off the surface, it’s important to perform the proper preparations to ensure the success of the project. Make sure to use a primer if the paint you’re using requires it.
2. You used the wrong paint.
No matter how many coats you apply, an interior paint simply won’t last (it might not even adhere in the first place) on an exterior surface. Needless to say, you have to use the right type of paint for your exterior painting project. Not only that, you also have to make sure you’re using high-quality paint for your home.
Pro tip: if the previous paint layer is latex, the next layer should also be latex.
3. You didn’t consult your Homeowners Association (HOA)
Some communities require that homes have the same exterior paint scheme. Choosing the wrong color can cost you a penalty or fee.
4. You painted during less-than-ideal conditions.
There is an optimal temperature for exterior painting. Generally, oil-based paint can be applied when the temperatures are between 40°- 90° while latex paint can be applied between 50°- 85°.
5. You didn’t hire a pro.
Sometimes, the only way to paint like a pro is to hire a pro, like our team at Handyman Connection of Mason. Give us a call today at (513) 733-3777 to learn more about our services and how we can make your home even more beautiful.
