Major home improvements can be stressful. There’s a lot to get down and unexpected issues can always arise.
This Stress Awareness Month, your local home remodeling contractor, Handyman Connection® of Mason shares some tips for a hassle-free renovation project.
1. Schedule Matters
The majority of people opt to tackle their major renovations during summer because the weather is nicer. It means that during this season, contractors are loaded with clients. There are times of the day where construction has to stop because of the heat. Because of this, it’s not always guaranteed that your project wil be finished on time and on budget. Scheduling your project during an off-season may save you on costs and stress.
2. Know Your Pet Peeves
References and reviews matter when it comes to hiring a contractor. Ask previous clients about the contractor’s working style and habits. This is to make sure they don’t clash with your own because it will only add up to your stress.
3. Don’t Say Yes to the First Bid
It’s helpful to hear at least three bids and study what each proposal covers. A higher cost may mean that there are no hidden charges and all problem areas are addressed. However, cheaper estimates may seem like a bargain but may have hidden costs. Always ask your contractor about all the expenses you’re going to cover.
4. Hire a Project Manager
It pays to hire experts in home renovation because you don’t have to worry about studying on remodeling methods that you don’t understand. If you’re a busy person, you probably don’t have the time to research about thermostatic valve values or electrical systems. A good project manager can relieve your stress on renovation processes you don’t know.
5. Let Your Contractor Handle Permits
You don’t necessarily have to personally get the permits for your renovation project. Your contractor can get these documents for you. It’s actually less of a hassle because you don’t have to review permit deadlines or book appointments with review boards.
6. Set Benchmark Deadlines
Create benchmark deadlines with your contractor before beginning with your project. These may include demolition, framing, electrical inspections and other milestones. This calendar may be digital or traditionally printed. If two of the benchmarks are missed, then it’s time for you to step in.
7. Manage Your Costs
Low down payments can discourage good workmanship. However, if you know that you have a reliable contractor and it’s legal in your state, it is recommended that you pay up to 50%. It’s important to have a contract stating that you’re paying the remaining amount once the work is accomplished.
