With most homeowners using their garage as a storage place, it’s not hard for some to keep packing it with stuff. This isn’t a good way to use a garage, however, as it will eventually become overloaded, and you won’t have space for your own car, which is what it’s built for in the first place. As such, we’ve put together some of the do’s and don’ts of organizing your stuff and maximizing your space:
Use a Wall Storage System
When using a garage for storage, you’ll most likely stack piles of boxes right on the floor. This can be limited; it might take up floor space meant for your car. Instead, try to maximize the amount of space you have in your garage walls. Consult with a trusted remodeler, and build a wall storage system consisting of shelves, cubbies and even lockers. If properly designed, you’ll see that you have much more room to spare than you thought.
Label and Organize
If you’re already using labels in your pantry or craft room, labeling can help make your garage even more organized. This is so you can find items more easily and without having to dig into each box. You don’t have to label every single item in your garage; just give an overview of them in a container so you can use it to distinguish between different items such as screws, nails or other fasteners.
Piling on Top of Each Other
Piling stuff in your garage without giving much thought will only create a lot of work for yourself any time you need to find something. It’s better to be organized and be able to see everything for better accessibility
Leaving Wasted Space
There are several ways to fully use your garage, such as using your entire space including your walls. Make use of overhead storage for lesser-used items, and stack boxes and containers only when possible.
