Preparing Your Deck for the Summer Season

The deck is a great place to relax during barefoot season, but you need to make sure it’s ready for the warmest time of the year. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your deck during the summer months.

Check for Rust or Rot

Winter snow followed by spring’s rains would have exposed your deck to plenty of moisture. If you have a wood or metal deck, parts of your deck might have suffered from rot or rust damage. Pay extra attention to the floor area. Rot and rust can cause the floor panels to weaken, and an errant step could cause them to break under the weight of your foot.

Look for Signs of Mold

There may be no sign of damage, but you should still watch out for signs of moisture-related problems. The most common of these are mold spots. These dark green or brown spots not only look unsightly, but could also indicate that moisture stays on your deck longer than it should. Small spots are fine, but major mold formations could indicate that rot and rust would be a problem in the future.

Prepare Sealant

Surface sealant like paint and wood finishes help prevent moisture damage and also cover up other types of damage like scratches and dents. While you can do this any time of the year, it’s still best to do this during barefoot season, when rains are less likely to ruin the seal before it properly sets.

Dress It Up!

Don’t welcome the barefoot season with a boring deck. Adding potted plants or a colored parasol will help liven up the area while staying true to the summer feel. If you want, you can even switch out deck furniture for colorful foldable chairs or bring out the grill for fun summer barbecue parties.
