Your Monthly Home Maintenance Checklist for the New Year

2020 is just around the corner! You may already have your New Year’s resolutions ready, but it’s good to make some more resolutions just for your home. Here’s a monthly home maintenance checklist to keep in mind.

January: Change your HVAC filters.

Start the year right by setting up a schedule to change your HVAC filters every one to three months.

February: Check your plumbing for leaks.

Leaks can cause a lot of damage if not sorted out right away. Check the plumbing in your kitchen and bathroom for leaks and give us a call if needed.

March: Seal your windows and doors.

Gaps and cracks around your windows and doors can cause heat to escape, leading to a spike in your energy bill. Add caulk or weatherstripping as needed. Consider replacement if your door or window is old or has extensive damage.

April: Inspect your home’s exterior.

At the end of winter, do a quick check around your home to see if you can spot any signs of damage. Check for buckled siding, fallen shingles or sagging gutters.

May: Prepare your outdoor living spaces for summer.

Use a pressure washer to clean your siding, deck, and driveway in preparation for warmer weather. Consider having your air conditioning units serviced well before temperatures go up.

June: Spruce up your deck.

If you love summer barbecues and outdoor parties, make sure your deck is in good shape before your guests arrive.

July: Organize your garage.

The best time to clear out your garage is when the weather is fair. Declutter and get organized! Hang tools on pegboards and sort items on shelves and in cabinets.

August: Inspect outdoor lighting.

Before the days get shorter, take time to reset the timers on your outdoor lights. Replace any burned-out light bulbs as well.

September: Have your roof inspected.

Prepare your roof for the winter months by giving it a ground-level inspection. Now’s also the best time to call a roofing pro for a thorough check.

October: Declutter cabinets.

Clear out and re-organize your kitchen and bathroom cabinets well before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

November: Check your floor.

Look for signs of wear and tear on your flooring to see if you’ll need a new one installed before the holidays.

December: Protect your pipes.

Freezing pipes can be a big problem in cold weather, so make sure to apply heat tape or add insulation around any exposed pipes.
