Noise coming from plumbing pipes is usually an indication of a problem, and the sound varies depending on the cause. Sometimes it can be a whooshing sound; other times it’s a banging noise.
In this article, trusted home maintenance expert Handyman Connection® of Mason guides you through the different types of noise that you can hear from plumbing pipes and what they could possibly mean.
Whooshing or Pulsing Sound
This type of noise occurs when water is flowing and stops once the valve is closed. It’s typically caused by a buildup of mineral deposits beginning to form inside the pipes.
Banging Noise
If you hear banging noise every time you turn the water on or off, this may be caused by improperly installed pipes behind the walls. When water flows through these obstructions, the banging noise is created.
Rumbling Sound
Rumbling sounds are often heard from a water heater. This could be an indication of sediment buildup at the bottom of the heater. When water is trapped boiling in the sediment, this means that the heat is unable to transfer to the water in the tank. You can drain the water from the bottom of the water heater tank to fix the issue.
Whistling Sound
If you hear a whistling sound and you can’t trace where the sound is coming from, a leaky toilet fill valve might be the culprit. You may need to repair or replace the fill valve so better consult with your local plumber.
Vibrating Sound
When you hear vibrating sounds every time you flush the toilet, the fill valve might be the problem. To know if replacing this component is necessary, you can test it by removing the tank lid and gently lifting the fill valve float arm. If the noise stops, it means that the fill valve has to be replaced.
