A yearly upkeep task is to check your home for signs of wood rot or dry rot around wood perimeters, in areas that are more likely to receive or leak in moisture, and more. Our craftspeople are here to share some tips on how to find, treat, and keep an eye on the dry rot in your home.
Dry rot is a fungal rot of the wood that can expand and effect large areas of dry wood. Wood rot is rot that is contained to where there is moisture exposure in the wood. They both need to be identified and fixed as soon as possible to save you higher repair costs and headaches.
Dry rot and wood rot can be identified by several tell-tale signs: being soft or easily punctured, discoloring, odor, swelling, and more. Use a flashlight and a long-handled screwdriver to test the wood. Wood rot can be found in but not limited to the following spaces:
Wood rot can be treated by drying out and sealing the affected area with copper wood preservative or borate. Dry rot requires the affected areas to be removed and replaced with pre-treated timber. Areas of the home that have not been affected should and should always be treated with a fungicide to prevent this from occurring. Wood rot from moisture can be prevented by installing an exhaust fan in the bathroom, and a dehumidifier in the basement.
