Home Organization Ideas For Your Garage

If you’re a homeowner, odds are pretty good you use your garage for far more than as a place for your car to sleep at night. A garage is extremely valuable as your own storage facility as well. Sadly, most people don’t get as much use out of their garage storage as they should, so here are some home organization tips you can apply to your own garage.

Plan Ahead

A primary reason that garages can become so disorganized is a lack of planning. Without committing to a storage strategy in advance, you’re unlikely to make very much progress. Think about how often you use an item. Things that are strictly seasonal or seldom utilized can be placed in the hard-to-reach parts of your garage, while the more common tools should be located near your garage door. If there are several things used for a specific task (gardening, for example), keep those items stored together.

Take Advantage of Overhead Space

One thing you can do with a garage that you can’t do in a bedroom is utilize the space over your head. Home organization experts are always finding clever ways to store things in garages. You can hang long, flat items (such as ladders) from the ceiling, or build a shelf that drops down. Either way, make sure that your overhead storage doesn’t interfere with the operation of your garage door.

Seal All Gaps

Since you’re making upgrades to your garage anyway, take advantage of the situation by inspecting it for gaps where air can leak between your home and garage. You’ll want to seal these spaces before any home organization changes that can make them inaccessible. Once identified, fill the large gaps with expandable spray foam, and the smaller ones with caulk.

You can achieve many of these improvements on your own, but you may find it helpful to enlist professional assistance with the more challenging home organization tasks. Need advice? Contact the skilled craftsmen at Handyman Connection of Lincoln, NE, today!
