Hardwood is one of the most famous flooring materials in America. However, not all hardwood flooring is the same and it isn’t just color that makes them different.
In this post, your trusted local remodeling contractor, Handyman Connection of Lincoln, discusses things you should consider when selecting a hardwood floor.
1. Solid or Engineered Flooring
Hardwood flooring is made of thick plants of solid timber. Engineered flooring are planks are topped with a thin layer of hardwood, bonded to other layers which keep the floor in place during expansion and contraction. Solid woods are usually quieter than engineered flooring.
2. Prefinished or Site Finished
Prefinished planks are already stained and coated by the manufacturer. It is easier and faster to install since it doesn’t require coloring or sealant.
Meanwhile, site finished planks are installed by professionals on site. They allow you to customize how much stain and sheen you want on your floor. The end product is also smoother since it’s sanded after installation.
3. Type of Finish
You can choose between an oil or polyurethane finish. Oil can make the wood appear matte, soft, and more natural. It scratches easily but it can be also effortless to touch up.
Polyurethane creates a harder finish which can make the flooring more resistant to wear and tear. If the surface gets scratched or damaged, you’ll have to replace a board or buff and recoat the area.
4. Wood Types
Oak is one of the top wood flooring options in North America. It has a more natural look and is very accessible in the region. White oak is another popular option as it lacks the red oak’s pinkish tones.
Walnut flooring is also preferred by many homeowners due to its deep, rich and warm tone. Other options include cherry, maple, hickory and ash.
5. Grain Pattern
Logs can be cut in three ways, plain-sawn, rift-sawn and quarter-sawn. All methods can end up on different grain patterns.
Plan-sawn yields traditional wood grain with wavy patterns or cathedrals. Rift-sawn boards have long, straight, consistent grain with no cathedrals. Quarter-sawn boards are like rift but have more irregular figuring. Typically, hardwood flooring is sold in the combination of the three cuts.
6. Plank Width
Hardwood flooring is usually installed in two to three-inch strips, but a lot of homeowners are choosing wider planks. Floors with wider planks have fewer seams compared to those with thinner strips. Keep in mind that the seams may appear more visible the more the wood expands and contracts due to the uneven distribution of movement.
