Moving can be both exciting and challenging. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of moving, to the point that you start forgetting about the little details. This is especially true during the moving-in phase. In this post, Handyman Connection® of Lincoln lists four things you should do before you move into your new home.
1. Change the Locks
Chances are, you’ll be moving into a home that had previous homeowners. You really don’t know who else has keys to your home, so make it a point to change the locks. This ensures that only you and your family members have access to your new home.
This might seem like a pricey project, especially after a new move, but it really isn’t. You can either install new deadbolts yourself, or have an experienced locksmith like us replace them for you.
2. Check for Plumbing Leaks
Technically, it’s your home inspector that should be doing this, but it never hurts to do a double-check on your new home’s plumbing. Keep an eye out for hidden signs of plumbing problems, such as leaky and drippy faucets and toilets that run even when not in use. It’s also a good idea to check your water heater for signs of leaks.
One easy way to tell if there’s a leak in your home is to check the water meter. Ensure that no one’s using the water in the house. If the reading is different, then you have a leak somewhere.
3. Clean the Carpets
The last thing you want to do is bring the pests from your old home into your new one, so make it a point to steam clean any carpets you’ll be bringing. This is a bit pricier, but it pays for itself by making your home a cleaner and healthier place in the long run.
4. Find the Circuit Breaker and Main Water Valve
Finally, you should “introduce” yourself to your new home’s circuit breaker and main water valve. The last thing you want to happen is to look for these two in a hurry when there’s an electrical or water problem.
