Cleaning Tubs and Drains the Easy Way

A clogged drain is a dirty drain. Drains typically become clogged with hair, soap, toothpaste and other scum. It may seem like a small thing, but a clogged drain can become a huge headache. Here’s how to clear one.

Remove The Drain Stopper

Remember to remove the stopper prior to cleaning your sink or bathtub. Clean it with a cloth or an old toothbrush soaked in white vinegar. Rinse, then replace it. If you cannot remove the stopper, clean around and inside it as best you can.

Unclog The Drain

Use a straightened wire coat hanger to either push the clog through or pull it out. If you are unsuccessful, use a plunger. Plug any other outlets with a rag to create a vacuum. Cover the head of the plunger with water. Pump the plunger 5-6 times, then pull it out fast. Repeat as many times as necessary. If the plunger doesn’t work, use a hand auger (also called a snake). Push the cable into the drain until it hits resistance. Using the hand crank either push the debris through or pull it out.

If the snake still doesn’t work, the clog could be in the sink trap. Place a bucket underneath the trap and unscrew the cleaning plug. If your trap doesn’t have a cleaning plug, unscrew the two slip couplings on either end of the trap. Use a wire to pull out any debris that is blocking drainage. Place new gaskets into the joints and reattach the trap.

Clean Your Drains Regularly

Once a month, pour hot water or a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda down your drain. Every six months, pour 2-3 cans of cola as a drain cleaner. Use a commercial cleaner only if your drain is completely clogged. Such cleaners contain very strong chemicals, so use rubber gloves and safety glasses. For bathroom drains, use drain openers that contain sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide.
