How Can I Improve My Indoor Air Quality?

Air pollution is something that most of us associate with smog, ozone, and the outside world in general. What you don’t know is that the air in your homes and offices can actually be more polluted than outside. Lead from dust, formaldehyde, fire retardants, and chemicals from the fragrance used in conventional cleaners all pollute your indoor air. Others come from new mattresses, furniture, and carpet cleaners. How can you ensure that the air inside your home is safe and clean for you and your family? Handyman Connection of Lincoln shares some tips.   Indoor Air

Source Control

One of the most effective ways to improve your indoor air quality is to eliminate the source of pollution or at least reduce their emission. Sources with asbestos can be sealed or enclosed, while gas stoves are easily adjusted to reduce the amount of emissions.

Ventilation Improvements

Another efficient way to lower the concentration of air pollutants indoors is to increase natural ventilation. When it’s particularly hot, you can open windows and doors to let the cool air in and allow the hot indoor air to escape. Installing kitchen and bathroom fans can help remove contaminants directly in the room where it’s located, and so increase the rate of outdoor air ventilation.

Air Cleaners

Choosing the right cleaner is important to help you make the most of this investment. When choosing an air cleaner, there are several factors you should consider. For instance, while a highly efficient collector can significantly reduce the contaminants in the air, it won’t be as effective if it has a low air circulation rate. Another factor in determining your cleaner’s effectiveness is the strength of the source of pollution. For example, tabletop air cleaners are not as effective as removing large amounts of pollutant from a strong nearby source. When using air cleaners, it’s best to use them in conjunction with other efforts to remove the source.

Doing these steps is key to ensuring a clean indoor air quality. In need of home improvements? Handyman Connection of Lincoln offers a range of home improvement services to help you create a safe home environment. Fill out our contact form or call us at (402) 875-9696 to get an estimate.
