How to Create a Window Box

window box

How do you create a window box? Window boxes are great additions to any home or office. They add color and interest to outdoor spaces and offer a convenient place to store plants and flowers. In addition, they provide privacy from prying eyes.

You’ll need some basic tools and materials, such as a hammer, saw, drill, screws, nails, paintbrush, stain, sandpaper, etc. The instructions are simple and straightforward.

Step 1: Cut the 2x4s into 4 pieces that will be used for the sides of your box. Measure out 3 feet from each end of one side of the 2×4 and mark with a pencil. Then measure down from this point on both ends of the other two sides. Draw lines connecting all four points. These marks will help you cut the boards later.

Step 2: Using the pencil marks as guides, draw a line across the top of the 2x4s using a carpenter’s square. Make sure the lines are perpendicular to the edge of the board.

Step 3: Use a circular saw to make cuts along the pencil lines. Be careful not to cut through the bottom of the 2×4. You can use a jigsaw if you prefer.

Step 4: Sand the edges smooth. If you want, apply a coat of stain or sealer before painting.

Step 5: Attach the first piece of lumber to the backside of the second piece by driving three 1/2″ deck screws through the back of the 2×4 into the front face of the first piece. Repeat this process for the remaining two pieces.

Step 6: Paint the outside of the box. Let it dry completely before adding plants and flowers.

Step 7: Add a layer of gravel to the bottom of the box. Fill in the rest of the space with soil. Water well after planting.
