What to Do When Your Water Heater Is Leaking

Turn Off the Water

Next, lessen the amount of leaking by turning off the water supply valve that feeds directly into the tank. Most water heater models have a switch or handle that turns off the cold water supply. This is usually located at the top of the tank. If you can’t locate this valve, you can temporarily turn off the water main for your whole house instead.

Call a Plumber

Plumbing problems are rarely solved with a DIY approach, especially if you’re dealing with leaks. It’s best to leave this job to a professional. Once power and water is shut off, contact your local plumber for an emergency service visit right away.

Keep Your System in Good Shape

Once the leakage is resolved, don’t forget to do regular maintenance on your water heater. Drain the tank at least twice a year, and periodically test the temperature-pressure release valve for any signs of a problem.
