When it comes to flooring, you can never go wrong with good, old-fashioned tiles. However, you need to carefully consider what the tiles are made of before purchasing your next flooring material. When it comes to tile materials, you often have three choices: porcelain, glass and ceramic. Choosing between the three of them may seem like a hard decision, but knowing more about them might make the selection process a bit easier on you.
Porcelain
If you’re considering porcelain, one of its advantages is its liquid resistance. According to experts, porcelain is dense enough that it’s highly resistant to almost any form of liquid penetration, making it impervious to water and preventing tile discoloration.
Porcelain tiles are also one of the toughest flooring options on the market with a breaking strength of 250 pounds, making them perfect even for commercial use. Apart from that, they are also low maintenance and have a long lifespan, if installed properly.
Despite these good qualities, porcelain tiles also have disadvantages, such as their weight. Compared to any other kind of tile flooring, porcelain tiles can be a bit heavier than most, making the installation process more difficult than usual.
Glass
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a cost-effective material, then glass tiles are the option for you. Glass comes in a wide variety of patterns, sizes and types. However, they do come with a single disadvantage: their quality. If you end up with low-quality glass tiles, they can easily be damaged if you accidentally drop something on them.
Ceramic
Ceramic tiles are very versatile, but one of their main advantages is water resistance, containing a protective layer over them that makes them impervious to stains and water penetration. This makes ceramic tiles perfect for kitchens and bathrooms as they can withstand high levels of humidity. Apart from that, they can also be very easy to maintain and are very hard to crack, meaning they can last through everyday wear and tear.
However, keep in mind that ceramic tiles can be difficult to clean, and, just like porcelain tiles, they can be quite heavy, making them unsuitable for upper-story installations.
