How to Clean Your Smoke Detectors

A smoke detector is a fire-protection device that detects the presence of smoke. When smoke particles interfere with the electrical current, the alarm is triggered and, therefore, gives off a warning signal. In a home, smoke detectors play an important role in reducing fire-related damage and injuries.

General Maintenance Routine for Smoke Detectors

Here are some tips for maintaining your smoke detectors at home:

  • Clean and test. Since smoke detectors are crucial safety devices, it is important to clean and test them to ensure that the units are operating properly and efficiently. Experts recommend performing this routine care every six months.
  • Replace batteries. If your smoke detectors are battery powered, make sure to replace the batteries at least once a year to ensure the proper operation of the devices. Batteries become less efficient over time, so it is essential to install replacements to avoid reliability issues.
  • Replace smoke detectors. Over the years, the smoke detectors will accumulate dust, dirt and other debris until they cannot be of service to you. If your fire-protection devices are nearing their tenth year, then it may be time to replace them.

How to Properly Clean Smoke Detectors

Here are some tips for cleaning your smoke detectors once every six months:

  • Vacuum the device. When vacuuming the device, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for routine cleaning. This step normally includes removing the face of the unit and then using a soft brush attached to a vacuum cleaner to get rid of dust and cobwebs. If possible, gently vacuum the interior of the device as well.
  • Wipe down the outside vents. Use a mild detergent to wipe down the debris buildup on the outside of the unit. Cleaning the vent openings ensures that the airflow is not obstructed.
