The Do’s and Don’ts of Garage Storage and Organization

A badly organized garage doesn’t just look bad; it also causes a lot of inconveniences and could even pose a serious injury hazard! You need to make sure everything is in order, but how exactly do you go about organizing your garage? Here are a few tips from our team of experts to help you make the garage a more orderly place.

Do Label Your Stuff

The easiest way to get an idea of what’s in each garage drawer or toolbox is to have each storage compartment labeled accordingly. Yes, even a sharpie will do, but you may want to look into getting a label printer for something more uniform and less likely to get erased. Labeling your stuff also makes the following step a lot easier.

Do Group According to Purpose

Items that can be found in your garage can easily be sorted according to their purpose. Pick the items you’re most likely to use on a regular basis and have them stored in the most accessible area. Items that are simply stored in your garage and are not likely to be used for a long time can be moved to the back or somewhere you won’t frequently bump into them.

Don’t Keep Flammables Near Heat Sources

Some items like spare propane tanks stored in the garage could pose a serious fire hazard, especially if it’s near heat sources like garage furnaces, generators or even directly facing a parked vehicle’s exhaust. Make sure you relocate these items to a much safer space. This is also true if you have a window in your garage that could cause sunlight to heat up chemicals or pressurized containers.

Don’t Rush Things

You have to understand that organizing your garage can take more than just a couple of hours. If you have a lot of things stored in there, you can expect re-organization to take more than a few days. Rushing the entire task could lead to even more mess, aggravating your storage issues. If you insist on speeding up the process, you may have to get help from family or friends instead of trying to rush things.
