Your home’s plumbing is usually kept behind walls and cabinets, which is why it’s easy to forget about it until it stops working properly. This part of your home’s mechanical system requires regular care to keep it efficient. Major plumbing problems can cost a lot so make sure to address them immediately or, better yet, prevent them before they occur.
Save yourself from expensive plumbing problems with these tips.
Before winter comes, it’s a good idea to add insulation to both cold and cold water lines to prevent them from freezing. Pipe insulation increases water heat retention on hot water supply pipes. It means that you don’t have to wait that much when you turn on the hot water at the faucet or shower. On the other hand, insulation on cold supply lines prevents condensation that results in freezing and ruptures.
The toilet tank usually sweats under humid conditions and after steamy showers. When a toilet sweats too heavily, water drips from the tank, creating puddles on the floor. Installing an anti-sweat valve can prevent this problem. It combines hot water into the cold water line, adding a tempered mixture to the toilet tank. Adjusting the valve will regulate the amount of hot water that enters the line.
Early detection of leaks can prevent water buildup that can result in structural damage or mold growth. Investing in a leak detector under sinks and near a sump pump, washing machine or water heater will get you notified in case a leak occurs.
Hard water has a high mineral content, which can reduce the life of your appliances. It usually contains huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and lime. A buildup of these minerals can also limit water flow and cause pipe corrosion and damage.
