Aging-in-Place Considerations for Your Living Room Update

With most homeowners choosing to stay in the homes they’ve bought years prior, the aging-in-place industry is seeing a steady rise in clients. More and more homeowners are having professionals modify their homes to suit their future needs. Surprisingly enough, there are many ways you can make your home aging-in-place worthy, and one of the rooms to make modifications is the living room.

Movement Room

As you get older, you’ll need a lot of movement room in your living room. Therefore, your living room needs to be big enough. Thankfully, there are two ways to accomplish this; the first is having a professional add to your home or knock down a wall to create more space. The second solution is to remove some of the things in your living room to prevent it from getting too cluttered. While the living room is the place to display sentimental items, consider getting rid of some of them by giving them to friends and family members.

Grab Bars

As you age, it’s possible for you to be off-balanced, and, once this happens, you might accidentally fall and injure yourself. To prevent this, consider adding some grab bars in your living room. You can have them added either where you normally sit so you can get up with no problem or along the walls so you can steady yourself as you walk around your home. Regardless of what your choice is, you’ll be a lot safer by having grab bars in your home.

Better Flooring

Another hazard that elderly homeowners want to avoid is slipping. When it comes to re-flooring your living room to make it more aging-in-place friendly, some recommend using carpet flooring for less chance of falling and less injury if you do. However, if you want to completely prevent tripping hazards that prevent falls, some recommend hard flooring instead. Either way, both are good flooring choices for an aging-in-place living room.
