How to Properly Clean Your Deck

While it serves as a perfect extension of your living space, decks require special attention to keep them in good condition. The elements can really do a number on exposed decks, which is why regular maintenance is not just important for upkeep reasons, but also for appeal and functionality.

Our expert craftsmen from Handyman Connection® of Grapevine have laid out a few guidelines on proper deck maintenance so you can spend more time relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.

Basic Cleaning

Sweep the deck boards regularly to remove any dust, dirt and debris that often accumulate on the floor’s surface. Small particles have a tendency to lodge themselves in between the boards and accelerate rotting of the joists and seams. Use a utility or a putty knife to scrape the buildup between the deck boards, or you can also buy a long-handled crevice cleaner for much faster and less tiresome cleaning.

When cleaning wood railings, it’s a good idea to start at the bottom move towards the top. If you start at the handles themselves, cleaning products often end up splattering on the floor and bleaching the surface. Lastly, avoid pressure washers as these can damage wood and vinyl deck boards, and void your warranty.

Sealing the Deck

You want to choose a sealant that’s clear to allow the beautiful wood details show through. You can also choose semi-transparent stains and toners to give your boards a little bit of color without completely covering the wood grain.

After cleaning, make sure that your deck is completely dry before applying the seal. It normally takes two full days under sunny weather to remove all traces of moisture on your deck. Sand visible imperfections and uneven surfaces, and check all screws and nails as these will be difficult to fix after the sealant is fixed.
