Important Tips to a Clean, Good-Looking Wooden Deck

Your home’s deck is a worthwhile investment. That said, it is imperative that it is well-maintained throughout the year. Cleaning and restaining your deck help restore its appearance and ensure its longevity. Read further for tips on achieving a good-looking outdoor space.

Prepare the Surface

The wooden deck must be free from any dirt and debris. Sweep the surface before you focus your attention to the spaces between the boards. Check if there are loose leaves stuck in between and remove them. You don’t want them to rot in the joists as it may cause the boards to rot as well.

Use a putty knife to remove any stubborn stains stuck on the deck board surface and crevices. Then,  clean the deck using a brush and a deck cleaner or bleach diluted in water to remove any algae or mildew on wood. You can likewise utilize a pressure washer to cover a large area of the deck. When you choose the latter, let the wood dry for two to three days.

Stain the Deck

You can restain your deck when you see the wooden boards are no longer able to repel water. Take note that for this to be effective, the wood must be dry all throughout. Applying stain on damp wood can result in cracks and peels later.

When applying the stain, use a roller for a thin, uniform coat. Apply using long, smooth strokes to stain two to three wooden boards at once. Two coats are enough to avoid any missed spots. Be sure to do this when there is low to average humidity and overall dry weather to promote faster drying. Don’t do it under direct sunlight.
