Stainless steel appliances offer a unique charm to any kitchen, but they aren’t the easiest to maintain. They are prone to showing hard water marks and fingerprints, which may be a dealbreaker to some people. Handyman Connection® of Golden shares some tricks to keep your stainless steel appliances clean and shiny.
The Basics
The downside of investing in stainless steel appliances is that they tend to appear streaky. When cleaning, move your cloth in one direction or follow the grain. You may also start in a small area and test things out if you are unsure about where to start. Using a microfiber cloth is also a good idea thanks to its soft and non-abrasive texture. This type of cloth is also reusable, unlike paper towels.
Before you start cleaning, check the manuals or manufacturer’s website and look for specific instructions. Glass cleaners, for example, may not be suitable for stainless steel cleaning.
Things to Avoid
Avoid cleaning with steel wool or scrubber pads; they may scratch the surface of your stainless steel appliance. Using a chlorine-based cleaner may also damage the finish. Harsh tap water, on the other hand, may leave spots or stains. Fortunately, many home-made solutions can be used that are readily available in your kitchen.
Home-Made Solution
For most people, vinegar and olive oil are enough to make their stainless steel appliances sparkly. Start by adding white vinegar to a clean spray bottle and spritz down your stainless steel appliance. Wipe the area using a microfiber cloth. You can then dip your cloth into a small amount of olive oil to make the appliance shiny and remove streaks and marks.
