The size of your home often has an effect on your property’s value. Having a smaller home, however, doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to do something about it. Square footage, after all, goes beyond the physical. And then, there’s also the visual space.
Handyman Connection of Golden® shares simple ways you can improve your home’s square footage by manipulating how big your visual space is.
Placing Larger Floor Tiles
This is an old visual trick and is a cost-effective way to increase the visual floor space of smaller rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. All you need to do is switch to larger floor tiles; specifically, a few inches bigger than the standard 12-inch ones. Installing larger floor tiles makes the room appear wider than it really is. On top of that, you’ll actually have to purchase fewer floor tiles due to their larger size.
Taller Windows
Installing taller windows can increase your home’s visual space on top of improving your home’s ventilation and insulation. The larger window “frees” up space because it opens your visuals to the outdoors. On top of that, it lets more natural light in, which further establishes this illusion of space that the room’s square footage is larger than it really is.
Diagonal Flooring
Another neat tile trick is laying the floors diagonally. This fools your eyes into seeing the floor pattern from a different perspective. This creates visual interest on the floor and allows you to change things up in terms of how you lay your tiles.
Reduce the Clutter
Finally, you can simply reduce your room’s clutter. A room that’s knee-deep in all kinds of knick-knacks will look cramped, so free some space by reducing the clutter. You’ll be surprised at just how much floor space you’ll actually have.
