Creating a Home Maintenance Calendar

As homeowners, keeping up with the list of responsibilities and tasks around your house can be a bit of a challenge, especially if it’s not organized properly. By staying organized, and creating a home maintenance and repair calendar, you’ll be able to keep up with your list of tasks, but also be proactive and prevent any major future problems or repairs down the road. Our goal here at Handyman Connection of McKinney is do everything we can to help keep your home in tiptop shape. Check out our list of recommendations and suggestions to create and maintain your home maintenance calendar.

Compile a List of Tasks

In order to create an organized list of tasks, you’ll first need to compile a list of tasks that need to be completed each year. Start by jotting down every single task that needs to take place, and make the list as robust as possible. Everyone’s home is different; therefore your list will be different from your neighbors. Keep in mind when creating your list that the purpose of the calendar is to help keep you organized so that you aren’t scrambling to complete a bunch of projects or tasks around your home at once, and it’s also to help prevent and stay ahead of any problems that you may identify when completing your list of tasks. When creating your list of tasks, you may also want to check in with any contractors, your real estate agent, homeowner’s association, or even a local home inspector. Whoever is familiar with your home will be able to help identify items or tasks that you may not even consider completing.

Organize Your List

Now that you’ve compiled your list, try as best you can to organize it into categories and seasons. You’ll also want to narrow down as best as you can as far as frequency goes. For example, cleaning your gutters should be a bi-monthly task whereas inspecting the plumbing systems should be a yearly or bi-yearly task. Also consider organizing them in an effective way, by organizing categories or sections of the house in the same sections or timing so that you can work a little quicker.

Put It Into a Calendar

Plug your categories into a calendar of your choice. There are many online resources that you can use with template calendars, or you can purchase one from a store that you can write your list on in an itemized format. You can also use a smartphone. Our crew recommends setting reminders ahead of time for yourself if you are going to use a smartphone. It’s an easier way to help keep you organized even if you forget to look at your calendar.

Start Completing the Calendar

As you start completing your calendar throughout the year, tasks may come up that you identify as areas that require professional help. If that’s the case, make sure to give our crew at Handyman Connection of McKinney a call. We’re always happy to help with any and all home maintenance projects regardless of how big or small the task at hand may be.
