Caulking Like a Pro in 5 Easy Steps

Caulking may be one of the simplest home repair tasks, but a small mistake can quickly create a mess. For flawless results, caulking requires practice and the right materials for the job. Read on as Handyman Connection® of McKinney shares five simple steps to caulk like a pro.

  1. Select Your Caulk Carefully. There are three types of caulk: latex, butyl rubber and silicone. Latex caulk works well for dry areas, while silicone is better for moisture-prone areas. For interior repairs, on the other hand, we recommend using latex or silicone caulk. Choosing the right caulk is important in helping you avoid issues later on.

  1. Remove the Old Caulk Completely. For a flawless caulk repair, it’s important to properly remove the old caulk first and prepare the surface. Using a retractable razor blade scraper, remove the old caulk on your tile or bathtub. Scrape it clean then vacuum up any remaining debris.

  1. Tape Off the Surfaces. Doing so will allow you to control the width of the joint while protecting the surrounding surfaces from the caulk. Mask off the surfaces using blue painters tape. We recommend using long sections of tape and applying them in a straight line.

  1. Apply the New Caulk. Cut the caulk’s tip at a 45-degree angle and puncture the seal with a long nail. Then, apply it carefully at a 45-degree angle, making sure to get it into the joint fully. Work at a slow and consistent speed to ensure professional results. The smoother the joint is in the beginning, the easier your job will be.

  1. Smoothen the Joint. After applying the caulk, it’s time to smooth the joint. Wet your finger with alcohol if you used silicone or water if you used latex and start working from one end to the other. Continue smoothing until the entire taped section is finished. When done, simply remove the tape and dispose of the debris.
