Wallpaper removal can be challenging and tedious, as it involves many steps. Fortunately, there are ways to make the entire process quicker and easier for homeowners. Read on as Handyman Connection® of McKinney, the leading general contractor, explains what you need to do:
Protect Your Room
Before beginning the project, protect your furniture, floor and woodwork. Remove framed artwork, clocks and other items from your walls. Cover outlets, switch plates and vents with tape and plastic. We also recommend moving the furniture to another room and using plastic to protect the floors.
Remove the Wallpaper
This can be a messy step, although many wallpapers are strippable. You can remove strippable wallpaper by prying up a seam edge and pulling it down gently at an angle. If your wallpaper isn’t the strippable kind, you’ll have to soften the paste first. Carefully remove the top layer of the paper by pulling it off the wall. This will leave you with the wallpaper backing. Apply hot water to the backing and let soak for at least 30 minutes. Then, scrape it off the wall in small sections.
Remove All the Paste
Working with a clean and even surface is key to a successful wallpaper application, so be sure you scrape off any remaining paste on the walls. For tough spots, you can also use a gel stripper. Apply this to the paste and scrape both of them at the same time. When done, rinse the wall with water and let dry.
