How to Make Your Home More Senior-Friendly

A senior-friendly home is important if one or two family members are in their golden years. To ensure that your home becomes an aging-in-place location for you or your elderly family members, there are some things you should take into account. Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie discusses them.

Make Your Home More Senior-Friendly

Switch to a No-Step Entryway

While the classic entryway with a small step remains a popular style, it’s not exactly a good design if you have older family members. Even a small step like that can cause a fall if your family member miscalculates and trips over the ledge. We recommend switching to a no-step entryway. You can either completely remove the step or turn it into a ramp for easier access.

Install Railings in the Bathroom

The bathroom can easily become the most dangerous place in your home for the elderly. The room is often damp, which means slips and falls are more likely to happen here than anywhere else in your home. Installing a stable handrail ensures that your elderly loved ones have something to hold on to while they use the bathroom. We also recommend putting a large, non-slip rug down to make the marble or tile flooring less slippery.

Switch to Pulls and Handles

Home hardware like doorknobs and handsets get increasingly difficult to operate as you age since they take extra effort to turn. Replace your old door hardware with pulls and handles. Not only are they easier to operate, but they are also sturdy and can double as support handles if someone loses their balance.

At Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie, we can help turn your household into an aging-in-place home that’s safer and more comfortable for you and your elderly loved ones. Fill out our form, or give us a call at  (952) 777-4875 for more information on our products and services.
