Why Energy Efficient Windows?

Why should you choose energy efficient windows? For starters, new windows are a great way to save on heating and cooling bills. Let alone, help regulate consistent and comfortable temperatures in your home.

Not to mention new windows can increase the value of your home. Here’s what you should know while looking into upgrading your windows.

Shopping Guide for Energy Efficient Windows

ENERGY STAR Certification

The first thing you should look for while shopping for new windows is the ENERGY STAR label.

ENERGY STAR-certified windows are manufactured by ENERGY STAR partners and have performance ratings. These meet the strict efficiency guidelines established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

NFRC Labels and Performance Ratings

Beyond the ENERGY START label, you can better compare different energy-efficient window options by looking at their NFRC ratings.

When it comes to windows, take the following into consideration.

1. The U-Factor

This determines how well a window keeps heat inside a room. The lower the number the better.

2. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

How well does a window keep the sun’s heat out of a room?

3. Visible Transmittance

This determines how well a window lights your home naturally. The more natural light you have, the less spending on lighting and electric bills you will do.

4. Air Leakage

This indicates how much air a window may let in (low numbers are better).

Window Materials

Additionally, you’ll need to look at what materials the window frame is made from. In general, non-metal materials like composite, wood or insulated vinyl will do a better job at reducing thermal transfer than aluminum or other metal frames. Fiberglass window frames are usually the best choice for energy efficiency.

Pay attention to the number of panes.

Double- and triple-paned windows have two or three layers of glass and are designed to reduce heating or cooling losses from inside the home. They also prevent the sun’s rays or outdoor temperatures from transferring into the home.

Multi-paned windows can also help to soundproof your home, which can be useful if you live in a busy area. Look for windows with a higher number of panes for better energy efficiency and soundproofing for your home.
