How to Build a Fire Pit

Before you can begin building your fire pit, check to see if there are any local building codes in your area that might restrict the construction of a fire pit. Make sure to see if your insurance has policy rules about having a fire on your property at all.

You will need several tools before you begin:

  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  • Mallet
  • Concrete or Stone Pavers
  • Garden Hose
  • Shovels
  • Tamper

When you start purchasing materials, trapezoidal blocks will create a fire pit in the ring shape. Rectangular and square boxes can make a rectangular pit. There are a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes to choose from too.

Fire Pit Installation

  1. Spray paint location of fire pit.
  2. Remove sod and dirt seven inches deep.
  3. Tamp dirt to a level surface.
  4. Fill the hole with crushed gravel for the base.
  5. Wet the gravel with a hose tamp to create a solid layer, a few inches below the surface.
  6. Lay fire pit blocks, make them level before taping down with a rubber mallet. Fill with sand to level as needed as well.
  7. Apply adhesive to fire pit blocks.

Once the fire pit is made, if you have a fire ring, go ahead and make sure it fits before using the adhesive. Also be sure to let it cure the number of days the type of adhesive requires before using the fire pit. With these tips, you will be ready to build a fire pit.
