Important Fire Safety Tips to Keep in Mind for the Winter Months

Winter is coming! No, seriously, it really is this time. With winter comes the more frequent use of heaters and fireplaces, putting your home at greater risk of a fire, so you should be even more attentive than usual when it comes to fire safety. In that spirit, here are a few simple things you can do to keep your home safe during the months ahead.

Check Your Furnace

You’re going to be asking a lot out of your furnace when winter arrives, so it’s a good idea to have it checked out in advance. Having a handyman inspect your furnace is not only a good idea when it comes to fire safety, but it will ensure that it’s working efficiently so that you and your family are kept safe and warm before the weather turns really cold.

Inspect Chimneys and Vents

If you use your chimney a lot, then it’s a good idea to have it inspected on a yearly basis. A flammable substance known as creosote will build up on the interior walls of chimneys and should be cleaned on a regular basis. Do you have a metal or glass screen in front of the fireplace? If not, be sure to get one. A screen will prevent sparks from flying into the room, and they’ll keep children and pets away as well.

Test All Smoke Alarms

You should always make sure your home’s smoke alarms are in working order, but it’s especially important for fire safety to inspect them before the start of winter. If you’re unsure as to the age of the batteries, you don’t want to take any chances, so go ahead and replace them all.

Be Careful With Lit Candles

Few things are as romantic as having lit candles in the living or dining room on a cold winter’s night. While the effect of candles is lovely, they can be dangerous if you’re not paying attention. Make sure lit candles are out of range of children and pets, and always put them out if you’re no longer using the room.

Make Space for Space Heaters

If you need a little extra heat for a room, don’t set up a space heater haphazardly. Keep them away from children and pets, as well as curtains or any loose or hanging fabrics. Also, only use heaters that come with an automatic shut off switch. These are designed to turn the space heater off whenever it becomes too hot.

If you’re concerned about fire safety for you and your family, following these simple tips before winter arrives is an essential part of maintaining a safe and happy home.
