Top Gardening Tips and Tricks

Have you been dreaming of starting your own garden but maybe have been unsure of where to start? Determining where to start with your garden will depend on what type you would like. For this post, we will concentrate on a vegetable garden. Here are some gardening tips and tricks to get you started.

Gardening Tips and Tricks: Getting Started

You’ve decided you want to grow your own vegetables — congratulations! Vegetable gardens may seem like a lot of work if you’ve never had one — and they can be — but the bulk of your work will be done upfront. Here’s what you need to do.

Pick the Right Spot

The first thing you should do is pick the plot site for your garden. If you just moved to a new home, or have lived in the same place for years, you’ll need to learn the lay of the land. Choose a site that you can keep in your sightline. Make sure this spot gets roughly six hours of sun a day. Too much or too little sun will not allow your vegetable garden to thrive.

Water and Soil

Can you run a hose to this site? If you can’t, you’ll need to haul water to this site every single time it needs to be watered. Try to keep it within proximity to a hose for ease! When you do choose your site and get down into the ground, be sure to include new, nutrient-packed soil to get your garden started off on the right foot.

Plants, Zones, and Frost

Learning what kind of hardiness zone is crucial so you can pick the correct plants for that area to thrive. Knowing which plants can go where will ensure a healthy garden. With this knowledge in hand, now you can plant! But, know your frost dates for your state. Planting too early or late could severely impact your garden.

Enjoy Your Garden

Once the plants are down, you can lightly mulch over the soil to protect the area from excessive weed growth and water loss. From here on out all you will need to do is maintain your garden with the proper watering and plant food and watch it flourish.
