5 Signs Deck Repairs Are Needed

Decks are a lovely addition to any backyard and are a great way to provide endless hours of entertainment for family and house guests alike. But, even the toughest of materials will require eventual deck repairs, and it’s up to you to identify when the time has come.

What to Look for While Inspecting Your Deck

Have you noticed while walking on your deck some areas appear worn, warped, or boards are loose? Those are some of the easier to identify problem areas that will need repair. Here are some of the top signs it might be time to bring in a professional.

1. Unstable Railings

Unstable railings are not only unsightly but are also dangerous. Signs of unstable railings include wobbling, broken, and rotted wood that impacts the top of your deck. If you find an unstable railing, be sure to indicate where it’s at so others will not rely on it until it is fixed.

2. Rotten Posts

Wood rot is not something to take lightly. Rotten posts can affect the entire structure of the deck and could even erode away and break. As a homeowner, if you spot rotten posts, it is advised to stop using the deck immediately until you can have a professional out to take a look.

3. Surface Damage

Your deck may become scratched from the use of outdoor furniture, grill, and just general wear and tear. But, if the surface damage becomes extensive, then it may be time to take a closer look. Extensive surface damage would include wood rot, damage from water, or even mold. This could cause the wooden deck to crumble.

4. Cracked or Splintered Boards

Cracked or splintered boards could be remedied by filling in the troubled areas, but deep cracks are an area for concern. The deeper the crack, the likelier it is someone can be injured by the splintered wood. In addition, deep cracks also weaken the area of the deck. These boards would need to be removed and replaced.

5. Missing or Rusted Hardware

Missing hardware on your deck could be causation for unsteadiness. If there is hardware missing on the ledger, it should be replaced immediately. Rusted hardware, including nails and screws, should also be a part of your routine maintenance checks for deck repairs.
