What to Consider When Choosing Kitchen Floors

Thinking about upgrading your kitchen floor? At Handyman Connection of Carmel, we can help install whatever flooring material you choose, but here are a few things to think about before picking the right option for your home.

5 Things to Think About Before Choosing Kitchen Floors

Maintenance

Different flooring types come with different maintenance needs. If you’re somewhat of a germaphobe, linoleum is a naturally antibacterial, no-fuss flooring option compared to hardwood. Hardwood takes the most maintenance, and should be cleaned at least four to six times a year to keep it in good shape. Additionally, it may need refinishing every 10 years or so, depending on how old and/or worn down it is.

Cost

Most flooring upgrades tend to be fairly expensive, but if you’re looking to save more on your kitchen remodel, vinyl and linoleum are solid price performers, compared to tile or hardwood. Both are extremely water-resistant and hold up well over time. Vinyl can cost between $2.50 – $5.00 per square foot, where linoleum can cost $5 – $7 for sheets or planks and $3 – $5 for tiles.

Moisture-Resistance

Spills happen – but some homes (read: home with little ones) are much more prone to them. If you’re looking for a spill-proof kitchen flooring option to get you through the high-traffic, big-mess kiddie years, linoleum and vinyl are virtually 100% moisture-resistant, making them great options. This is also a great kitchen flooring option if your kitchen shares a door with your mudroom or home’s exterior.

Tile is also a highly water-resistant material, but is more expensive than other options.

Durability

When choosing a kitchen floor option, it’s important to consider your day-to-day life at home before pulling the trigger. If yours is a kitchen full of kids’ toys and clawed furry friends, you’ll want to choose something that won’t scratch easily, like a tough, non-porous tile or a harder hardwood like walnut.

Style

Finally, think about the look you’re going for in your kitchen. While more expensive, hardwood tends to be a much more universally stylish option than some of the lower-maintenance flooring choices. But, other less-expensive flooring options like vinyl and laminate can now mimic (and fairly convincingly, we might add) the look and feel of hardwood at a fraction of the cost.
