7 Ways to Lighten Up a Dark Room

Many times homeowners can feel a dark room becoming darker due to the décor and other features that were once appealing. Especially if that room lacks the luxury of natural light, there are still ways to make the room appear brighter and lighter. That’s why our expert crew at Handyman Connection of Boise has put together a list of 7 tips and ways to help you lighten up a dark room. Check them out here!

Swap Out the Door

If you have the option, change out a solid door near the exterior of the house with a glass door. Solid doors will prevent any natural light from getting in. You can also use this idea and apply it to internal doors if appropriate, as it will make the darker room appear more open, airy, and brighter.

Bring Life Indoors

Incorporate natural plant life into your home to actually bring life and add a freshness to a dull, dark room. There are plenty of plants that are perfect to have indoors that require little maintenance, but add a lot to the room. Adding houseplants will help to brighten up a room and will serve as a natural purifier for the air. It’s a win-win!

Brighten the Ceiling

One of the easiest go-to ways to brighten up a dark room is by brightening up the ceiling. The ceiling is a main focal point, so when it’s dark it affects the whole feel and style of the room. Repaint the ceiling a bright, crisp white color, and the room will naturally brighten up.

Furniture Rearrangement

As simple as this may sound, simply rearranging your furniture can do wonders for the feel of a dark room. You can instantly brighten up a darker room by rearranging furniture if it’s cluttered in one area and by adjusting the flow of the room.

Lighten Up the Light Bulbs

Replace old bulbs with bright, new ones. Do this in the ceiling fans, light fixtures, and all lamps in the room you have in mind. This also seems fairly simple, but will certainly make a difference. Also consider the type of fixtures you have in the room. Larger fixtures can actually do the opposite of creating light in the room, and can clutter it up making it appear darker than it really is.

Add Rugs

If you have a darker carpeting or flooring, consider adding a lighter colored rug. A larger rug that covers the majority of the darker flooring can help create a brighter, lighter feel throughout the room.

Add a Large Mirror

By installing a larger mirror, you’re adding a natural light reflector very easily. Try putting in an oversized mirror to a darker room to instantly brighten up the area. You’ll even give the illusion that the room is bigger than what it really is.

At Handyman Connection of Boise, our goal is to help you with any and all of your home maintenance projects no matter how big or small that task may be. Give us a call with any questions about other ways to brighten up a dark room, or if you’d like to discuss your next project.
