Waterproofing must be done during dry weather, so before scheduling your project, check the forecast and make sure you\u2019ll have at least 48 hours of calm, dry weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clear Out and Clean Off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin by removing outdoor furniture and other items from the deck. Loosely cover delicate plants and flowers nearby with tarps or drop cloths, sweep off dirt and debris, and hammer down any protruding nail heads. If any boards are damaged, they will need to be repaired, or you can take advantage of&nbsp;deck repair service&nbsp;from Handyman Connection. After the deck surface is clean and repaired, it\u2019s time to move on to power washing. Check that the water pressure is no higher than 1,000 PSI, and keep the spray nozzle several feet away from the deck to avoid damaging the wood. Make sure to deck is completely dry before moving on to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sand Off the Old Layer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While power washing will remove much of the previous waterproof coating, sanding is also necessary to remove the remainder and level out any rough or splintered areas. This can be achieved using medium-grit sandpaper and a pole or orbital sander. A smooth, clean surface will help the new coating set in better, resulting in a higher level of protection for the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose and Apply Your Sealant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The myriad of deck stains and sealants available can make choosing one a very confusing process. Whichever one you choose, be sure that it does these three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Repels water.<\/li><li>Blocks the sun\u2019s harsh UV rays.<\/li><li>Preserves the wood by protecting against mold and mildew.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve chosen a high-quality finish, lay down a thin, even coat with a stain brush, following the direction of the boards. Remember to apply the finish to all exposed surfaces, including steps, railings, board ends and cracks. Don\u2019t allow the stain or sealant to pool, or you\u2019ll have an uneven finish. In addition, don\u2019t apply it in direct sunlight, or it will dry before fully absorbing into the wood. A second coat can be used if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Final Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The deck must fully dry before it can be used again, so stay off it for at least 48 hours to allow it to do so. In the meantime, you can remove the coverings from the landscaping. Or maybe your attempt at hanging a 50-pound mirror went terribly, terribly awry.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how it got there, if you&#8217;re staring at a black hole where drywall should be, you&#8217;re probably wondering where to begin in fixing it.<\/p>\n<p>Here at Handyman Connection of Austin-Westlake, we&#8217;re no stranger to drywall holes and sheetrock repairs big and small, from simple nail pops to indoor baseball mishaps.<\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;re determined to patch this hole the DIY way, here are a few tips to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 style=\"color: black; font-weight: 400; font-size: 20pt; text-align: center;\"><strong>Tips to Keep in Mind When Repairing Sheetrock<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr>\n<h3>1. For nail pops, use screws and spackle<\/h3>\n<p>Tiny nail holes are easy to fix &#8211; simple apply a little spackle to the hole, sand it down so it&#8217;s flush with the wall and paint over.<\/p>\n<p>But nail pops are different. If you&#8217;ve noticed little round holes popping out on your walls, these are known as nail pops. They can occur over the years as a house settles and the beams behind the drywall push the nails outward.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing nail pops requires two drywall screws &#8211; one above and one below the nail pop &#8211; and spackle. Once your screws are in, cut out the damaged, popped drywall around the nail in the middle. Then, spackle over both screws and the damaged part of the wall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Be careful not to drive the screws in too deep &#8211; if you do, you&#8217;ll have to insert another screw near the first to fix it properly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. For medium-size holes, use sticky fiberglass mesh or galvanized metal patches<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For holes larger than a quarter, you&#8217;ll need to use sticky fiberglass mesh or a galvanized metal patch over the hole before applying a spackling compound. This will give your patch the structure it needs to hold up during painting without crumbling.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve done this, spackle over the patch, sand it down and paint as needed.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_146262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146262\" style=\"width: 688px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/handymanconnection.com\/austin-westlake\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/05\/drywall-tools-to-repair-drywall-hole.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146262 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/handymanconnection.com\/austin-westlake\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/05\/drywall-tools-to-repair-drywall-hole.png\" alt=\"Tools for Repairing Drywall Holes\" width=\"688\" height=\"329\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Tools you&#8217;ll need for repairing drywall may include a putty knife, seam tape, spackle and spare drywall (for larger fixes).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h3>3. For large holes, use supports and scrap drywall<\/h3>\n<p>If the hole is larger than 5 inches in diameter, you&#8217;ll need to cut out the damage and screw in a few pieces of scrap lumber to support your replacement patch.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve done that, secure a section of drywall that fits within your cutout, cover the seams with self-adhesive mesh and apply drywall joint compound. Then, sand down the join compound and repaint as needed.<\/p>\n<h3>4.
