Repair Small Areas Of Wood Rot With Polyester Filler

You can rebuild and restore wood without replacing it by using a polyester filler. You can mold and shape this filler to match the original wood profile and then paint it. This filler won’t rot and it can bring new life to your old door. Handyman Connection of Alpharetta explains the things you need to do to repair small areas of wood rot:

Polyester Filler

  • Get Everything Ready – Save time and effort by having all of the necessary tools and materials ready before you begin. You will need a wood chisel, sanding block, paint brush, putty knife, rasp, and utility knife. You will also need wood hardener (consolidant), polyester filler, and 100-grit sandpaper.

  • Apply Wood Hardener And Filler To The Damaged Area – First, you will need to remove the rotted wood with a sharp tool. Then you need to coat the area with a wood hardener. This will solidify and strengthen the wood fibers. Next, mix polyester wood filler and press it into the gap using your putty knife. Depending on the current temperature, you will have about 10 to 15 minutes to work before the filler hardens.

  • Shape And Smooth The Area – Polyester tends to sag when you are performing vertical repairs, so you need to wait until the sagging filler reaches the hardness of soap. You can then carve it off with your chisel or putty knife. You can also shape it with a rasp or Surform plane. Take note that most medium to large repairs need at least two layers of filler to complete. Add this filler if necessary. Finally, finish the repair by sanding and priming the filled area, then painting it.
