Patching Up Damaged Doors

Similar to other components of your home, there will come a time when your doors will need a few tweaks regardless of how much effort you put into maintaining them. To avoid compromising your door’s energy efficiency, charm and functionality, be sure to fix any damage right away.

Handyman Connection® of Alpharetta discusses how to fix your doors in today’s post.

Gouges and Scratches

These two types of door damage affect both solid and hollow-core doors. To cover or fill the gaps, use a putty crayon for gouges and scratches less than a quarter inch in depth. Putty crayons come in a wide range of colors, so you won’t have to worry about mismatching colors. Use it like you hold a pencil and apply its tip with force over the damaged area until the gap is covered with crayon residue.

For gouges that are deeper than a quarter inch, use wood putty to fill the damaged areas. Allow it to dry for at least an hour. Smooth the surface of the door using 180-grit sandpaper. You can then use a stain marker to color the hardened putty to complement your door.

Cracks

Cracking occurs on most solid doors. For hairline cracks in wood grain or between joints, use a putty crayon. Bigger cracks, however, may require a solid-wood patch. Trim random slices from a piece of hardwood that’s similar to your door using a bandsaw. As soon as you find the piece that fit the crack, sand and glue it. Let it dry overnight. You can then chisel the residual glue and the remainder of the wood strip. Color the exposed edges of the strip using a stain marker.
