Cleaning Grout Lines The Right Way

Grout lines are very tricky to clean since they’re porous, but you should never skip them when you’re cleaning your kitchen and bath space. This area is notorious for harboring molds and mildew that will be very difficult to get rid of once they settle. Handyman Connection of Alpharetta discusses how to clean grout lines the right way.

Grout Lines

Lightly Stained Grout

You can address lightly stained grout easily with a simple bleach solution. Just mix ¾ cup of bleach to a gallon of water. Then, using a small brush or an old toothbrush, apply the mixture to the grout lines and start scrubbing.

Scrub lightly; scrubbing too hard might permanently damage the grout. Once you’re done giving the grout lines a scrub, simply wash the area with warm water. Apply the mixture again until the grout is completely clean.

Deep Stains

Grout that’s been left too long will have deep stains that you can’t remove with a moderate bleach solution and some scrubbing. In some cases, you’ll have to remove and replace the grout. We suggest you purchase or rent out a grout scraping tool and use a stronger bleach solution or grout cleaner to do this.

To clean a deeply stained grout, run the tool along the space between the tiles to remove the old grout. Keep your hand steady to avoid scratching the surrounding tile. Then using your bleach solution or grout cleaner, clean the space between the tiles. Finally, apply the new grout and seal it.

When Should You Call a Professional?

Grout can easily become breeding grounds for unsightly things like mold and mildew, which might aggravate allergies in your family and generally pose a health risk. If you’re not confident removing the grout on your own, our team is more than capable of cleaning your kitchen and bath space’s grout lines.
