7 Simple Steps To Prepare A Room For Painting

A new coat of paint can greatly improve a home’s appearance, making it an excellent home improvement project. If you plan on painting the room yourself, however, you need to make sure that the results are of the best quality since you’ll be living with them for a long time. Handyman Connection of Alpharetta talks about the seven steps you need to take to prepare a room for painting:

Painting Room

  1. Step One – Remove your furniture to protect it from paint splatters and to make painting the ceiling much easier. We suggest using a temporary storage unit to keep things simple. If the room’s furniture is too large and bulky to remove, then you need to place it in the center of the room and cover it with plastic.
  2. Step Two – Use drop cloths to protect your floor from paint. Drop cloths are better than plastic sheeting or newsprint because they do not shift under your feet while you work. They also do not puncture easily. We recommend using a professional grade butyl-backed cloth because it prevents spilled paint from soaking through and reaching your floor.
  3. Step Three – You need to remove all of the wall hangings before you paint because you need a full, flat surface to work on to create a professional-looking paint job. Use bubble wrap on your wall hangings and put them in storage bins. You can also take this opportunity to rearrange your wall hangings after painting. Just remove the nails and picture hangers and put them in a new position once everything is finished.
  4. Step Four – Clean the walls with mild detergent and water to create a beautiful result after painting. Don’t forget to thoroughly rinse the walls and let them completely dry out before starting to paint, however.
  5. Step Five – You need to remove the switch plates and outlet covers because they just get in the way of a smooth and even paint result. If you try to paint around them, your walls will have visible brush strokes and smudged paint. Make sure to turn off the room’s power and remove them before you begin.
  6. Step Six – Use professional painter’s tape to keep the baseboards, windowsills, trim, and moldings covered. This allows you to paint without any worries. Be careful not to cover areas that you will need to paint. Step Seven – Create a staging area to prevent paint spills and accidents. A staging area will also help you paint more efficiently because you will know the location of all your paint supplies at all times. You can make a staging area using boards placed between two sawhorses or using a folding table covered with a drop cloth.

Follow these steps and your new room should look like it was painted by a pro. However, if you’d like to spare yourself the effort of painting your room yourself, then give us a call.
