When Is It Time to Recaulk the Bathroom?

For some people, the bathroom is an afterthought, only used for its most basic functions. Others make it their retreat, somewhere to relax, unwind and enjoy little luxuries. However you choose to use this essential space in your home, there’s a certain amount of upkeep that needs to be done in order to keep your bathroom functioning well. One element that needs to be maintained in the bathroom is the caulking. Continue reading to find out why caulk is important and the signs to look for that will indicate your bathroom may need to be recaulked.

What’s So Great About Caulk?

Caulk is a type of thick adhesive material that’s used to fill exposed joints and seams and seal around pipes. In the bathroom, its purpose is to finish the areas where two different materials meet, as well as to prevent water leakage that can lead to mold, mildew and water damage. For this reason, it’s important to use caulking specifically for bathrooms that’s mold- and mildew-resistant. You can apply the caulk yourself with a caulking gun, or hire a handyman company to handle the job. In the bathroom, caulking can be used in a variety of different places, such as:

  • Where tile meets the ceiling.
  • Around faucets, sinks and shower heads.
  • Where the vanity meets the backsplash and the backsplash meets the wall.
  • At the top and along the joints of tub or shower surrounds.
  • Where a tub surround meets the floor.

What to Look For

If it’s been more than five years since you last caulked your bathroom, chances are it’s about time to do it again. If you want to be extra sure, however, watch for these signs that your caulk is starting to break down:

  • It is peeling or missing pieces in places.
  • It has cracked or dried out.
  • Mold or mildew can be found under the caulk, which is an indicator of water leakage.

Note: If your caulk starts to deteriorate within a year of applying it, it’s likely that the one which you chose wasn’t meant to be used in the bathroom.
