Tools Every New Homeowner Should Own

If you’re a first-time homeowner, chances are you’re used to calling a landlord to fix home-related issues. Once you purchase your first home and become your own landlord, those responsibilities fall on you. While it’s sometimes necessary to call on a handyman company like Handyman Connection, part of being a homeowner is having a well-stocked toolbox to tackle those small repairs and do-it-yourself projects. Here are a few essentials to get you started.

  • Hammer. Part of the joy of homeownership is decorating your walls with artwork, framed photos and other decorative items. Whether you need to pound a nail in, pull one out or pry something up, a hammer is invaluable to have at your disposal.
  • Screwdrivers. A Phillips screwdriver (with the x-shaped tip) can be used for a variety of purposes, from tightening cabinet handles to replacing the batteries in children’s toys. It’s a good idea to have several Phillips with different tip sizes for various projects, or find one with interchangeable tips so you can change sizes as needed. You will also need a flathead screwdriver for items that have straight screws, such as light switch plates and outlet covers.
  • Tape measure. A tape measure is necessary for numerous applications around the house, such as hanging pictures, determining what size window coverings you need to order, or figuring out if the new couch you want to get is going to fit in the space you want to put it. It’s also indispensable for home improvement projects. One tip to keep in mind when using a tape measure: always measure at least twice, just to be sure!
  • Power drill and drill bits. Unless you want to spend ages using a regular screwdriver to hang heavy pictures, put up curtain rods or mount TVs on the wall, you’re going to want a power drill. Drills are especially important for building projects due to the amount of time and energy they save. Make sure to purchase a good selection of drill bits that include Phillips, flathead and square tips.
  • Pliers. A sturdy pair of pliers with serrated jaws are helpful if there’s anything you need to grasp and hold, yank out, twist or pinch together.
